Neuroophtalmology

Diagnosis and treatment of optic nerve diseases are performed in our Neurophthalmology Unit.

NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY UNIT

The visual pathways from the optic nerve to the visual cortex where vision occurs and also the diseases in the brain cortex are the subject of neuroophthalmology. It also deals with the harmonious movement of the eyes.

Congenital anomalies of optic disc: Optic disc pit, coloboma, hypoplasia; the tilted disk optical disc is a part of this group and may impair vision.

Papilloedema:  In brain tumors and increased intracranial pressure, edema and swelling may be observed at the optic nerve head.

Inflammation of the optic nerve (Papillitis): It usually occurs following a viral infection or due to multiple sclerosis. Even though a certain improvement is expected within 1-2 months, it may cause visual sequelae.

Ischemic optic neuropathy: It occurs with vision loss over 50 years of age.

Pituitary tumors:   By pressure on the visual pathways, they indicate visual field losses.

Double vision: The disease may be present in the nerves that control the muscles of the eye, especially if both eyes are open and a double vision is involved. It may be a disease such as bleeding in the brain, ischemia (lack of oxygenation), tumor or multiple sclerosis.
