Independence war against spectacles and contact lenses

WHAT IS EXCIMER LASER?

An UV laser , 193 nm in wavelength, produced by electrical stimulation of Argon-Fluoride gas mixture. Thanks to its precision, a single human hair can be etched using the excimer laser.

It is possible to etch a single hair with this laser.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The transparent tissue in the front of the eye is called the “cornea.” The Excimer Laser can reshape this tissue at submicron precision by breaking molecular bonds. The cornea is flattened in myopics and steepened in hyperopics. Toric corneal surface is made spherical in astigmatism.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

Persons aged 18-60 without any serious systemic or eye problems can benefit from this treatment. Myopia up to -12, hyperopia up to +5, astigmatism up to 7 diopters can be corrected.

HOW DOES A DOCTOR DECIDE IF I AM A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THIS OPERATION?

Biomicroscopic Examination Ophtalmic Examination

In addition to a detailed ophthalmic examination, corneal topography and pachymetry (shape and thickness of the cornea) are evaluated with sophisticated devices.

Corneal Topography Corneal Topography Imaging

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE THE EYE CHECK-UP?

Soft contact lenses must be discontinued 1 week prior to the examination day. (3 weeks for hard-RGP lenses)

WHAT TECHNIQUE IS BEST FOR MY EYES?

LASIK is the most often preferred laser refractive technique worldwide because of its quick recovery features. Nevertheless if LASIK cannot be done for some reason the patient may still benefit from surface ablation techniques called PRK or LASEK. Main disadvantages of these tecniques are longer recovery time and greater patient discomfort.

WHAT WILL I FEEL DURING THE OPERATION?

LASIK is a totally painless procedure. The eyes are numbed with drops. The microkeratome produces a 10 second pressure feeling on the eye then the patient watches the “fireworks” of the laser.

WHAT IF I MOVE OR BLINK MY EYE?

The laser has an “active eye tracker” system that follows the eye. A special lid retractor prevents blinking.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE OPERATION?

Tearing and burning may happen for 2-3 hours and is accepted as normal. Antibiotic drops are used every 1-2 hours until bed time. The eyes are protected with transparent plastic shields. The day after the surgery a 5 min. post-op check is done.

WHAT SHOULD I AVOID?

Rubbing should be avoided but the patient can take shower or wash his or her face keeping the eyes closed. Eye make-up and swimming are not permitted for 3 weeks.

WHAT IS CUSTOM LASIK?

Custom LASIK corrects not only the myopia or astigmatism but also some errors called “higher order aberrations” that decrease optical quality further. Spherical aberration, coma and trefoil are some of the aberrations that are detected by an aberrometer and the data are linked to the laser unit. “Supernormal vision” may be achieved in custom treatments. At least a higher quality of vision is expected especially in patients with thinner corneas, thanks to the “tissue saving” feature.Thousands of successful operations have been performed in our hospital

LASIK

(Laser In-situ Keratomileusis):A corneal flap, which is about 160 microns in thickness, is created using a device called a “microkeratome.” The flap is needed for patient comfort and stability of the visual results.

WAVEFRONT TECHNOLOGY

The marriage of physics, math and state of the art medicine…The technology first used to create optically perfect telescopes now is used to create “perfect” eyes.Below, the Allegretto Wavelight 400 Hz Eye-Q & the Bausch and Lomb Technolas 217 Z LASIK, the Excimer Laser units used in our treatments.

ISTANBUL EYE HOSPITAL

Our hospital was designed, constructed and equipped with state of the art instruments, to serve solely as an eye surgery center. Our experienced medical staff performs thousands of eye surgeries annually. As a young hospital building its national and international reputation, fees are reasonable without sacrifacing medical quality.
